They do not live in mown lawn and they do not live in dense forest interior — they live in the transition between the two, and in the leaf litter and tall grass along a fence line, a bayou bank or the boundary of a wooded lot. Lone Star Tick

Abundant across southeast Texas and the one we encounter most. The adult female carries a distinctive single pale spot on her back. Lone star ticks are unusually aggressive questers — they will actively move toward a host rather than waiting passively — and the larvae, sometimes called seed ticks, turn up in large numbers at once.

Brown Dog Tick

The one that concerns us most in a domestic setting, because it is the tick that can complete its entire life cycle indoors. A brown dog tick problem in a kennel, garage or utility room is a genuine indoor infestation rather than an outdoor one carried in, and it is treated quite differently.

American Dog Tick and Gulf Coast Tick

Both present in the region, both associated with grassy and brushy habitat rather than deep woodland, and both picked up by dogs along field edges and trail margins.

Our Tick Control Process

Habitat Survey

We walk the boundary and identify the edge zones: where mown lawn meets tall grass, the leaf litter under a hedge, the shaded ground along a fence, an ivy bank, the run beside a wooded easement. That is the treatable habitat and it is usually a fraction of the property.

Perimeter and Edge Treatment

A residual application to the transition zone and the leaf litter within it. Broadcasting over open sunny lawn is largely wasted, because ticks desiccate in direct sun and are not there.

Treating Where Pets Actually Go

Dog runs, the shaded side of the house, the path to a back gate, under a deck. Ticks arrive at a house on an animal, so the animal's route is where the pressure is.

Habitat Modification Advice

Frequently the highest-value part of the visit. Clearing leaf litter, cutting back the tall grass strip along a fence, and putting a dry gravel or bark border between lawn and wooded edge all reduce tick habitat directly and permanently.

Why Ticks Are Worth Taking Seriously

Disease Transmission

Ticks in this region are associated with several human illnesses, and lone star tick bites are also linked to alpha-gal syndrome, a delayed allergic reaction to red meat. We are not doctors and will not diagnose anything, but the risk is real enough to justify reducing exposure at home.

Risk to Dogs

Dogs pick up ticks far more readily than people do and are exposed to tick-borne illnesses of their own. Preventatives are your vet's remit and worth keeping current; reducing the population in the garden is ours.

The brown dog tick's ability to breed indoors is unusual among ticks and is the reason a persistent problem in a home with dogs sometimes has nothing to do with the garden at all.

Ticks Found on Pets Repeatedly

One after a walk in a park is expected. Several in a week, from your own garden, means an established population on the property.

Ticks Found on People

Especially children, and especially after playing in a particular corner of the garden. That corner is the habitat.

Seed Ticks

Dozens of very small larval ticks on a person or animal at once, usually after brushing past tall grass. This indicates an egg mass nearby.

Ticks Indoors on Walls or Ceilings

Brown dog ticks climb, and finding them at height indoors strongly suggests indoor breeding rather than an animal carrying them in.

Wildlife Pressure

Deer, opossums and raccoons moving through a property bring ticks with them, and a garden backing onto a wooded easement or a bayou corridor carries more risk than one that does not.

What Helps Between Visits

Keep the lawn mown and the tall grass along fences cut back, and clear leaf litter from under hedges and shrubs — that removes the humidity ticks need to survive. A three-foot dry gravel or bark strip between lawn and wooded edge is a genuinely effective barrier because ticks will not readily cross dry open ground. Check pets each time they come in from a wooded area, and check yourself and children after gardening, paying attention to the hairline, behind the ears and behind the knees. And keep the veterinary preventative current, because it stops most ticks before they attach.
