Squirrel work is a building problem as much as an animal one. Getting the animal out is the straightforward half; the half that determines whether you call us again in a year is how the entry point is closed and what is done about the roof access that made it possible. Houston's mature live oaks, pecans and pines put branches directly over a great many rooflines, which is why we see this constantly across Memorial, Kingwood, The Woodlands and the older inner-Loop neighbourhoods.

What Is Actually in Your Attic

Eastern Gray and Fox Squirrels

Both are common across the Houston area and both will use an attic as a nesting site. Fox squirrels are the larger, rustier animal and are more at home in open oak and pecan cover; grays are smaller and greyer and do well in denser canopy. For our purposes the behaviour and the fix are much the same.

Telling Squirrels From Rats

Timing is the clearest signal. Squirrels are active around dawn and again in the late afternoon, and the sound is heavier — a rolling, dragging, tumbling noise rather than light scratching. Rats are mostly active after dark and move more quietly. We confirm it during the inspection rather than guessing from a description of the noise, because the treatment is entirely different.

When It Is Most Likely to Happen

Squirrels here have two breeding periods a year, broadly late winter and again in mid-summer, and attic entry spikes around them. A female looking for somewhere dry and defensible to raise a litter is what drives most of our calls.

How They Get In

Gable and Roof Vents

The single most common entry we find. The louvre screen is usually thin aluminium mesh that a squirrel opens without much effort, and once it is torn the gap is permanent.

Soffit and Fascia Junctions

Where a roofline steps or a soffit returns, there is often a gap that was never properly closed at construction. Add a little weathering to the fascia board and it becomes an entry.

Roof-to-Wall Intersections and Chimney Chases

Flashing that has lifted, or the boxed chase around a chimney, gives access straight into the roof space.

Chewed Timber

Squirrels are rodents and their incisors grow continuously. Given a slightly weathered fascia board and a reason to be there, they will make their own opening.

The Branch Overhead

Almost every job we do has one. Squirrels jump further than people expect, and a limb within a few feet of the roof is a road.

Full Roofline Inspection

We identify every active entry, not just the obvious one, and check for secondary openings that would let the animal straight back in after the main one is sealed.

Checking for Dependent Young

This happens before anything is closed. Sealing an entry with a nursing female outside and a litter inside creates a far worse problem than the one you called about — for the animals and for you, because young that die in a wall void become a smell and an insect problem in a Houston summer. Sometimes the correct advice is to wait a short period, and we will say so plainly.

Humane Removal

One-way exclusion devices let the animal leave and prevent it returning, and are the cleanest approach where the layout allows. Live trapping is used where it does not. Texas regulates what may then be done with a trapped squirrel more tightly than most homeowners expect, and we explain exactly what the lawful options are for your situation before we start rather than afterwards.

Sealing That Holds

Entries are closed only once the space is confirmed clear, and closed with heavy-gauge metal mesh and flashing fitted flush so there is no edge to get a tooth under. Expanding foam, caulk, plastic vent screen and light hardware cloth are all chewed through, and we have re-done a great many jobs that used them.

Cleanup and Deodorising

Soiled insulation and nesting material are removed and the area treated. This is not cosmetic: the scent left behind is a signal to the next squirrel that the site is viable, and it also carries the parasites that came in with the animal.

Reducing Roof Access

We will point out which branches give access. Trimming back to a few feet of clearance does more for the long-term result than anything else on this list.

Why It Should Not Be Left

Chewed Wiring

The reason we push people to deal with this promptly. Squirrels gnaw whatever is in reach and attic wiring frequently is. It is the most serious risk in the whole job.

Damaged and Compressed Insulation

Nesting flattens insulation and soiling ruins it. In a Houston summer that shows up directly on a cooling bill.

Water Damage

An opening at a roofline is an opening for rain. Torn vents and lifted flashing let water into a roof space that was designed to stay dry.

Parasites

Fleas and mites come in with the animal and stay after it leaves, which is why the cleanup step exists.

It Does Not Resolve Itself

An attic that has held one squirrel will hold the next one. The entry is open and the scent says the site works.

What You Can Do Now

Walk the perimeter and look up: torn gable vent screens, lifted flashing, a fascia board with fresh pale gnaw marks, and any branch within a few feet of the roof. Keep bird feeders well away from the house, since they concentrate squirrels exactly where you do not want them. If you are already hearing movement overhead in the early morning, have it looked at before the next breeding period rather than after — the job is smaller and the wiring risk is shorter-lived.
