What Silverfish Actually Are

Appearance and Behaviour

Flat, tapered, silver-grey insects that move with a quick fish-like wriggle, with three long tail filaments and two antennae. They are nocturnal, they avoid light, and they are usually first seen when a light goes on in a bathroom at night or when a stored box is moved.

Slow to Build, Slow to Clear

Silverfish are long-lived by insect standards and develop slowly, which cuts both ways. A population takes months to become noticeable, and it also does not collapse overnight. A treatment that looks incomplete at two weeks is often working exactly as expected.

What They Feed On

Starches and polysaccharides: paper and book bindings, wallpaper paste, cardboard, photographs, dried food in a pantry, and the sizing and starch in fabric. They do not bite, do not transmit disease and do not damage structure — the harm is to what you have stored.

Where We Find Them in Houston Homes

Bathrooms and Laundry Rooms

The void behind a vanity, under a bath skirt, around the base of a toilet, and inside a laundry cupboard. Poor extraction is the usual underlying cause.

Garages and Storage Rooms

Cardboard boxes stacked directly on a concrete slab wick moisture and feed the insects at the same time. This is the single most common source we find.

Attics

Paper-faced insulation and stored cardboard in a humid Houston attic is close to ideal habitat, and it is why silverfish sometimes appear in upstairs rooms with no ground-floor activity at all.

Moisture Assessment First

We look for the source before we look at products. Where a leak, a blocked extractor or a drainage problem is feeding the population, treating without addressing it means a repeat visit and we would rather tell you that at the start.

Inspection of Harbourage

Wall voids, the gaps behind skirting, cabinet kick spaces, the underside of stored boxes and the perimeter of an attic. Silverfish sit tight in confined spaces and are found by looking rather than waiting.

Residual Application to Cracks and Voids

Product goes into the harbourage, along entry routes and behind fixed cabinetry rather than across open floors. Silverfish spend almost all their time in places you cannot see, and treatment has to go where they are.

Dust in Voids and Attic Spaces

An insecticidal dust holds well in dry voids, wall cavities and attic perimeters, which are exactly the places a liquid application cannot reach or maintain.

Baiting Where Appropriate

Bait works well in pantries, storage areas and around stored paper, where placing a residual would be inappropriate.

Follow-Up

Because development is slow, a second visit checks whether numbers are genuinely declining rather than whether the treated insects died. That is the only meaningful measure with this species.

Common Problems Silverfish Cause

Damage to Books and Documents

Surface grazing on paper, notched page edges and damage to book bindings and their glue. Stored paperwork and photographs in a garage are the usual casualties.

Damage to Fabric and Wallpaper

They feed on starch and sizing, which means stored linens, wallpaper paste and the seams of packed clothing.

Contamination of Stored Food

Yellow Staining and Shed Scales

Sightings in More Than One Room

Suggests harbourage in a shared void or attic rather than a single damp spot.

Shed Skins and Scales Accumulating

Silverfish moult throughout their lives, so accumulating scales indicate a population rather than a stray insect.

What Helps Between Visits

The most effective single change is getting stored cardboard off concrete and into sealed plastic bins — it removes the food and the moisture at once. Run bathroom extractors properly and for long enough after showering, check under sinks and around the base of the toilet for slow leaks, and improve airflow in a closed storage room. Reducing humidity does more for a silverfish problem than any product does, and it holds indefinitely.
