Moth Control in Houston

Two entirely different problems get called a moth problem, and separating them is the first thing we do. Clothes moths damage natural fibres in wardrobes and storage; pantry moths infest dried food in a kitchen. They look different, live in different rooms and are treated in completely different ways, and treating one as though it were the other wastes everybody's time.

Neither is a sign of a dirty house. Both are usually brought in — a secondhand garment, an inherited rug, a bag of birdseed or a box of grain that was already infested when it left the shop.

What They Damage

Natural protein fibres: wool, cashmere, silk, felt, fur, feather and animal hair. The adults do not feed at all — every hole in a jumper was made by a larva. They favour undisturbed, dark, undisturbed places, which is why the damage turns up on a garment stored for a season rather than one worn regularly.

Where We Find Them

The back of a wardrobe, storage boxes under a bed, the underside of an area rug where it sits beneath furniture, felt on a piano, and packed winter clothing. In Houston, winter woollens spend most of the year in storage, which gives larvae an uninterrupted run.

What You Actually See

Small buff-coloured moths that scuttle and flutter weakly rather than flying toward a light — a moth circling a lamp is almost certainly not a clothes moth. Alongside them: silken tubes or cases, fine webbing in a fold of fabric, sandy frass, and irregular grazed holes.

How We Treat Them

Inspection to find the source garment or textile, which is nearly always a single item. Treatment of the wardrobe or storage space itself — cracks, corners, carpet edges and under fixed furniture — rather than of clothing. Pheromone monitors to track males and confirm whether numbers are actually falling. And a clear plan for what should be laundered, dry-cleaned or put through a freezer cycle, because heat and cold both kill every life stage and neither costs anything.

Pantry Moths

What They Infest

Flour, cereal, rice, pasta, dried fruit, nuts, pet food, birdseed and chocolate. The Indianmeal moth is the usual culprit, and it is remarkably good at getting into packaging — larvae chew through thin plastic and cardboard without difficulty.

Where the Source Usually Is

Almost always one forgotten container at the back of a cupboard, or a bag of pet food or birdseed in a garage. People commonly throw out the visibly infested item, miss the real source, and see moths again a fortnight later.

What You Actually See

Small moths with a distinctive two-tone wing — pale at the base, coppery at the tip — flying around a kitchen in the evening, and silken webbing binding grains together inside a package. Larvae also wander well away from the food source to pupate, so finding them along the top edge of a cupboard door or where the wall meets the ceiling is normal.

How We Treat Them

The core of it is finding and removing the source, then cleaning the shelving thoroughly, particularly the cracks at the back of the shelf and the runners. Where treatment is appropriate it goes into cracks and voids rather than anywhere near food. Pheromone traps then confirm whether the problem is genuinely resolved rather than leaving you guessing.

Identification First

Clothes moth or pantry moth. Everything after this depends on it.

Locating the Source

One garment, one rug, one container. Moth work is largely a search rather than an application, and the search is what makes it stick.

Targeted Treatment of Harbourage

Wardrobe interiors, carpet edges under furniture, shelf cracks and cabinet voids. Never applied to clothing or to food.

Monitoring

Pheromone traps give an objective read on whether the population is declining, which matters because both species have life cycles long enough that a lull means very little on its own.

Follow-Up

A second visit checks the trap counts and deals with anything that has emerged since. Eggs are not affected by most treatments, so the follow-up is part of the job rather than a sign it went wrong.

Common Problems Moths Cause

Irreplaceable Textiles

The financial loss is often small and the personal loss is not. Wool rugs, tailored coats and inherited blankets are what people actually mind about.

Contaminated Food

A pantry moth infestation usually means discarding a fair amount of dried goods, and checking everything rather than only what is visibly affected.

Damage That Is Found Too Late

Because clothes moths work in stored items, the damage is typically discovered the first time something is taken out for the season, months after it happened.

Recurrence

Both species recur reliably if the source item is missed, which is the single most common reason a moth problem comes back.

What Helps Between Visits

Store wool and silk clean — larvae feed on the perspiration, skin and food residue in a fibre more readily than on the fibre itself, so a worn garment is a target and a laundered one much less so. Use sealed containers rather than garment bags for long-term storage, and move stored textiles occasionally, since disturbance alone discourages them. In the kitchen, decant dried goods into sealed glass or hard plastic, keep pet food and birdseed sealed and outside if possible, and use older stock first. Cedar and lavender smell pleasant but will not resolve an established infestation, and it is better to know that than to rely on them.
