Mosquito Control in Houston

Houston is close to a best case for mosquitoes: standing water in abundance, a long warm season, flat drainage and heavy rainfall. There is no version of mosquito control here that eliminates them from a property permanently, and anyone promising that is not being straight with you. What is achievable is a substantial reduction in the biting population on your own ground, maintained through the season.

Doing that well means treating two things — the resting habitat where adults shelter during the day, and the water where the next generation is developing. A programme that only sprays foliage is doing half the job.

The Mosquitoes That Matter Here

Southern House Mosquito

The evening and night biter, and the primary West Nile virus vector in this region. It breeds in water with organic content: storm drains, neglected containers, plant saucers, blocked gutters. Harris County Public Health runs surveillance and trapping for exactly this species, which gives a sense of how seriously it is taken.

Yellow Fever and Asian Tiger Mosquitoes

Container breeders and daytime biters, and the ones responsible for most complaints about being bitten in a back garden at four in the afternoon. They fly short distances — often a matter of a hundred yards or so — which is genuinely good news: if you are being bitten by these, the source is very likely on your property or your immediate neighbour's, and it can be dealt with.

Floodwater Mosquitoes

The enormous aggressive mosquitoes that appear in numbers a week or two after heavy rain or a flood event. Their eggs sit dormant in soil for long periods and hatch together when the ground floods. They are a short intense pulse rather than a permanent population.

Property Survey for Breeding Sites

This is where the value is. We walk the property looking for water: plant saucers, bird baths, rain barrels, tarpaulins, children's toys, wheelbarrows, the base of a downpipe, corrugated fence caps, blocked gutters, French drains and the low corner of a lawn that holds water for days. It takes very little water and very little time to produce a generation.

Larval Control

Water that cannot practically be removed — a drain, an ornamental pond, a persistently wet low spot — is treated with a larvicide that kills developing larvae. Bacterial larvicides are highly specific and are the single most efficient intervention available, because a mosquito killed as a larva never bites anyone.

Barrier Treatment of Resting Habitat

Adults spend the day resting in cool shaded vegetation: the undersides of leaves in dense shrubbery, ivy, under decking, in the shade beneath a raised structure. A residual application to that habitat is what produces the noticeable drop in biting, and it is applied to the vegetation they use rather than broadcast over open lawn.

Seasonal Scheduling

Barrier treatments break down under Houston sun and rain, so mosquito work is a recurring programme through the warm months rather than a single visit. We will tell you the realistic interval rather than the one that sounds most impressive.

Post-Storm Response

After a significant rain event the picture changes: new standing water everywhere and a floodwater hatch on the way. That warrants a re-survey rather than sticking to the schedule.

Pollinators

Barrier treatments are applied to resting habitat rather than to flowering plants, and timed to avoid peak pollinator activity. Tell us where your vegetable beds and flowering borders are and we will work around them.

Ponds and Water Features

Ornamental ponds with fish are treated with materials appropriate to that, or left to the fish, which are often doing the job already.

What Does Not Work

We will say plainly that ultrasonic repellent devices do not work, and that bug zappers kill mostly harmless insects while barely touching mosquitoes. Neither is something we will sell you.

The most common reason people call. A back garden that is unusable from April to October is a real loss, and it is the thing most readily improved.

Heaviest activity beside an ivy bank, dense shrubbery or under a deck indicates resting habitat, which is directly treatable.

What Helps Most Between Visits

Tip out anything holding water, once a week, without exception — saucers, buckets, toys, tarpaulins, the tray under an air-conditioning unit. Change bird bath water weekly. Clear the gutters, because a blocked gutter above a patio is one of the most productive breeding sites we find and almost nobody checks it. Fix the low spot in the lawn that stays wet for four days after rain. These cost nothing and they remove generations of mosquitoes that no treatment ever has to deal with.
