Stinging insects are the one category where we routinely tell people not to attempt it themselves. A paper wasp nest under an eave and a honey bee colony inside a wall are very different jobs, and both go badly wrong when approached with a can of spray from a hardware shop and a ladder.

There is also a specifically Texan consideration. Africanized honey bees are established across most of the state, including this region. They look essentially identical to European honey bees, they defend a much larger area around their colony, and they respond in far greater numbers. That is the reason we do not encourage anybody to test a colony's temperament by disturbing it.
What You Are Likely Dealing With
Paper Wasps
The open umbrella-shaped grey nest hanging from a stalk under an eave, a porch ceiling, a soffit, a mailbox or the underside of patio furniture. Colonies stay fairly small and the insects pay you little attention away from the nest itself — but they defend it firmly, and one hanging beside a door the household uses every day is a problem no matter how placid the colony is.
Yellowjackets
More defensive and more numerous. They nest in cavities — a wall void, a gap in the brickwork, an abandoned rodent burrow in the ground, the space behind a soffit. Because the nest is concealed, people frequently find them by mowing over the entrance or leaning on the wall above them. Colonies build through the season, so a late-summer yellowjacket nest is a much bigger proposition than a spring one.
Mud Daubers
Solitary wasps that build the small tubular mud nests on walls, in garages and under eaves. They are not aggressive, they very rarely sting, and they prey on spiders — including widows. We will happily remove the nests for appearance, but we will also tell you they are doing you a favour.
Carpenter Bees
Large bees that bore neat round holes into unpainted timber — fascia boards, deck railings, pergolas, fence rails. The males hover aggressively and cannot sting; the females can and almost never do. The real issue is cumulative structural damage from galleries extended year after year, and woodpeckers opening the timber further to reach the larvae.
Honey Bees

How We Handle Each
Wasp Nest Removal
Treated at dusk or dawn when the colony is at the nest and least active, with the nest physically removed afterwards rather than left in place. Removing it matters: an abandoned nest site is frequently reused, and the residue attracts scavenging insects.
Concealed Cavity Nests
For a yellowjacket nest in a wall void the entry point is treated and monitored, and it is not sealed immediately — sealing a live nest's only exit drives the colony inward through the wall and into the room. This is the most common mistake we are called out to fix.
Carpenter Bee Work
Galleries are treated, then plugged once activity has stopped, and we will point out which timber is vulnerable. Painted or properly sealed wood is markedly less attractive to them than bare timber, which is the durable fix.
Honey Bees in a Structure
We will always discuss live removal by a beekeeper first where that is practical. A colony in a wall cavity cannot simply be killed and left: the comb and honey remain, the wax melts in a Houston summer and stains through sheetrock, and the abandoned stores draw ants, roaches, wax moths and eventually another swarm to the same cavity. Proper resolution means opening the cavity, removing comb and honey, and sealing it. That is joinery work as much as pest work, and we would rather set out honestly what it entails than quote you for the easy half of it.
Swarms in the Open
A swarm hanging from a branch or fence is a colony in transit and usually moves on within a day or two. It is generally docile, having no nest or stores to defend, and it is a good candidate for a beekeeper. Leave it alone and call somebody.

Underestimating a Concealed Colony
What looks like a few wasps at a gap in the brick can be a nest of thousands behind it. There is no way to judge the size from outside.
Allergy
Roughly a small percentage of people have a serious systemic reaction to stings, and many do not know until it happens. That alone is reason enough to keep a household off a ladder with a spray can.
Reducing Nesting Next Season
Check eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, mailboxes, grills, playground equipment and the underside of patio furniture in early spring, when nests are the size of a coin and trivial to remove. Keep bins sealed and clear fallen fruit, both of which draw yellowjackets heavily late in the season. Seal gaps in soffits and brickwork before spring so cavity nesters have fewer options, and keep exposed timber painted or sealed to discourage carpenter bees. Small preventative attention in March saves a considerably larger job in September.
